Iron Infusions

Iron deficiency can leave you tired, short of breath, dizzy or unable to concentrate. When iron tablets have not worked, are not tolerated, or your iron needs to be replaced quickly, your GP may recommend an iron infusion. ZH Doctors Cleveland offers iron infusions in a comfortable, supervised clinic setting.

What Is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a small drip in your arm. It replaces your iron stores much faster than tablets, and most people only need one infusion. Many people notice more energy within a few weeks.

Not bulk billed – private fee applies

A GP consultation is essential before an iron infusion can be booked. Your doctor will review your blood tests and confirm an infusion is safe and suitable for you.

Who May Benefit

  • Iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia confirmed by a blood test
  • People who cannot tolerate iron tablets or have not improved with them
  • Pregnant women (after the first trimester) when advised by their doctor
  • People who need their iron raised quickly, for example before surgery

How It Works

  1. See your GP to review your blood tests, find the cause of your low iron and confirm an infusion is right for you.
  2. Get your prescription. Our team will tell you whether to collect the iron medicine from your pharmacy and bring it with you.
  3. Book your infusion with our reception team once your GP has confirmed it is right for you.
  4. Allow about an hour. The infusion takes 15 to 30 minutes, then you are observed for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Follow-up blood test a few weeks later.

Before Your Appointment

  • Eat and drink normally and keep taking your usual medications unless told otherwise
  • Stop iron tablets as advised by your doctor
  • Tell us if you are pregnant, have reacted to iron before, or have asthma or allergies
  • Wear a top with loose sleeves

Possible Side Effects

Most people have no problems. Some have a headache, nausea, aches or a metallic taste for a day or two. Rarely, iron can leak under the skin and cause brown staining that may be long-lasting, so tell the nurse straight away if the drip site stings. Serious allergic reactions are very rare, and our team is trained to manage them.

Fees

Iron infusions are not bulk billed. A private fee applies for the procedure, and a Medicare rebate may apply to part of the cost. The iron medicine is supplied on prescription. Please call us on 07 2142 4233 for current fees before you book.
